NO ONE SEEMS TO HAVE THE DEFINITIVE, PUBLIC ANSWER AT THIS POINT. Employees have been spreading the word that the popular bakery, coffee and sandwich shop is closing but that seems to be off, at least for now. Rent increases often drive out businesses, even and because they become successful: then the landlords often want higher rents. We don't know if that's the case here. Panera is cutting back nationally with the Rockville location closing May 19.

During mornings, at noon and throughout the afternoon/early evening hours, Panera has not just been a place to eat but a community and individual gathering center. It is what the British call a "third place" beyond work and home where people can gather at will, talk to neighbors, plan events and just socialize. No appointment necessary and no bother about how long you want to stay.

The Olney Farmers and Artisits Market received a $2,500 grant recently to help pay for two free movie nights on the Market grounds this summer. The first movie night was held last summer and hundreds of adults and children made it a great success, with food vendors selling out and everyone enjoying the movie.

Other members of the mostly volunteer crew at the Olney market gathered for a photo with Jim Smith as the award was presented. Last year, it took a crew of five, working mostly as volunteers, to set up the projection screen and movie playback equipment, including an excellent sound system.
The answer is a definite no, even though talk of ending the town incorporated status of Brookeville swept through the village in recent weeks. The reports said that one newer resident wanted to push the change but that discussion apparently went nowhere or ended in a truce. (For those who don't know, Olney is not officially a town in Maryland. It is a "census designated place" without a council or mayor and other emblems of recognized, local government.) Brookeville has long be recognized by the state of Maryland as an official town, with a town supervisor and council members along with local control of many matters not handled by the county wide government.
IT HAPPENED IN THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS with a sign placed on the door that the owners were looking for another place in this area to locate. As with other closings in rented space, rate increases might have played a role although FIVE GUYS, Olney, seems to have grown less popular in recent times. Workers recently were clearing out the interior of what had been FIVE GUYS with no indication of what might be moving in at the time. During the years Five Guys has been in Olney it has become a world wide brand of hamburgers and fries, nothing else (except free peanuts and flavored sugar water, otherwise known as soda.
